Fantasy Premier League Tutorial for Beginners

Everything you need to know to build your squad, pick a captain and start climbing your mini-league table

What is Fantasy Premier League?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is the official fantasy football game of the English Premier League. You build a virtual squad of real players, earn points based on how they perform in real matches, and compete against friends, family and coworkers in mini-leagues throughout the season.

The Basics

Squad & Budget

Pick a 15-player squad - 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders and 3 forwards - within a £100m budget. Only 11 players start each gameweek.

Captaincy

Choose a captain each gameweek to double their points, and a vice-captain as backup in case your captain doesn't play.

Transfers & Chips

Make 1 free transfer per gameweek to adjust your squad, and use chips like Wildcard or Triple Captain to change the rules in your favour.

How mini-leagues work

A mini-league is a private table where you and your friends compare your total FPL points, gameweek by gameweek. It's where the real competition happens - bragging rights matter a lot more than your overall rank among millions of players worldwide.

The official FPL site only updates mini-league standings once bonus points are confirmed, which can take until the day after a match. FPL.fun tracks your mini-league live instead, so you can follow rank changes, provisional bonus points and automatic substitutions as they happen.

Common Questions

What are bonus points (BPS)?

Every player gets a Bonus Points System (BPS) score each match based on their performance - goals, assists, key passes, tackles and more. The top 3 BPS scorers in each match receive 3, 2 and 1 extra points. FPL.fun shows you these provisional bonus points live, before they're officially confirmed.

What are automatic substitutions?

If one of your starting XI doesn't play in a gameweek, they're automatically replaced by the highest-scoring valid substitute from your bench, according to your bench order. FPL.fun applies these live as matches happen, not just after full-time.

How many transfers do I get?

You get 1 free transfer per gameweek, and unused free transfers now roll over so you can bank up to 5. Extra transfers beyond your free ones cost 4 points each, deducted from your total score.

What is a chip?

Chips are one-off boosts you can play to change the rules in your favour for a gameweek - Wildcard (unlimited free transfers), Free Hit (temporary unlimited transfers for one week), Bench Boost (bench points count too) and Triple Captain (captain scores 3x instead of 2x).
